Hey, Bro! Old-man confession - I couldn't understand the woman, so I Googled her lyrics to this song! Now, I'm making a comment based on the fact I have very little knowledge of Regina Spektor. I'm thinking she's trying to say, in her own folk-musicy way, that many people have a "Pocket God": they don't take God seriously until a crisis hits, then they take God out of their pocket, pray for Him to bail them out, and when He does, they put Him back in their pocket. No relationship, no interaction, just a good luck charm. Am I close?

I agree with Rance. Have never heard the phrase "Pocket God", but it fits.
